We feel your pain, Winston.
We feel your pain, Winston.
"Woke" readers will recognize this excerpt immediately:
To know and not to know, to be conscious of complete truthfulness while telling carefully constructed lies, to hold simultaneously two opinions which cancelled out, knowing them to be contradictory and believing in both of them...to forget whatever it was necessary to forget, then to draw it back into memory again at the moment when it was needed..."

Winston Smith contemplated the phenomenon called "doublespeak" in George Orwell's 1984, and we couldn't help but wonder about the many who seem to be advocates of the practice these days. The same people who are horrified about the incompetence of our federal government seem to take every opportunity to demand that Washington D.C. take charge of all of us and everything we do (or are allowed to do.) The people who berate the President for not forcing every state into lockdown (although he has no authority to do that) and then call him a dictator regarding his actions during the pandemic. See how that works? They're the ones who are most practiced at doublespeak.

We like to think we're helpful, here at TWAN. To help clear this up for anyone who is confused about the doublespeak being demonstrated here, we offer this caveat:
