We've never met a catch phrase we didn't like.
Alternative facts. (One of these things is not like the other.)
I like to imagine the conversation went something like this in the White House when Kellyanne came in from the lawn after her appearance on Meet the Press:
"KellyAnne, KellyAnne, KellyAnne. Relax. We know you had NO PLANS to be doing any of this in January. Let's not play games - none of us did! Who knew he could win? But here we are and we have to figure out what to do next.
Yes, we're already working on your graceful exit from the team, and yes, we all know Celebrity Apprentice can use a new host before February Sweeps, but we can't do that yet! Imagine how it would look to have the woman who was the media face and voice of the campaign walking away after four days on the job!"
Then again, it's everyone's fault. If in fact President Trump was so worked up about the crowd numbers at his inauguration - and he seemed to be, at least a little, based on his remarks at the CIA - shame on him. If Sean Spicer and Kellyanne Conway received direction to dispute the reported numbers and create a new narrative about the event (AKA "alternative facts") shame on the people giving that direction and shame on them for taking it.
Most of all, shame on Chuck Todd for relentlessly pursuing such a non-issue. And since at Two Weeks Ago News, our memories are limited and fairly rigid, we're not going to document the "alternative facts" various administrations have presented to the American public over the years. Not going to go there. But you can feel free to!
Suffice it to say, if disputing the size of the crowd is the biggest lie that ever comes out of the Trump Administration, that's good news for all of us.
Thanks for joining us for this long first weekend of Two Weeks Ago News. The first week - and all the outrage we experienced - is ahead.
